Sunday, May 23rd, 2010In the natural sciences and “hard” social, impact factor is a suitable proxy, after measuring the number of articles citing the articles already published in the journal. The classification of the prestigious journal in some individuals has been attempted, usually with lyrics of the university ranking of their importance.
We can distinguish two categories of techniques for evaluating the quality of the journals and the development of paper charts (Lowry et al. 2007):
Many scientific journals are funded by universities or professional organizations, and there to make a profit, however, often takes the publicity, Page and positions of the image of the authors to pay the costs of production. In addition, some newspapers are produced by commercial publishers who benefit by charging subscriptions to individuals and libraries. You can also sell all of its collections of newspapers in a variety of packages or other disciplinary.
Journal editors tend to have other duties, most often as the teaching of teachers. In the case of the largest newspapers, are not paid staff working in the newsroom. The production of newspapers is increasingly paid by a publisher. Humanities and social science academic journals are often subsidized by universities or professional organization
The Internet has revolutionized the production and access to academic journals (Hendler 2007), online content available through services performed by university libraries. The papers are indexed in databases such as Google Scholar. Some of the smaller, more specialized journals are home to a university department, published online only – this form of publication has been sometimes in blog format.
At present, there is a movement in higher education, encouraging open access, either through self-archiving, whereby authors deposit their works in a shop where you can search and read, or through publication in a newspaper for free and open access, that charge for subscriptions, whether subsidized or funded by the author of the payment page. However, to date, open-access journals has affected more of Humanities. Commercial publishers are now experimenting with open access models, but are trying to protect their income from subscriptions.
